In my Ash Wednesday homily, I talked about fasting from behaviors and facilitating changes by positive actions. I wish I could take credit for this concept but it is something I heard Pope Francis talk about a few years back and it has really resonated and stayed with me. Sure, I could give up ice cream, chocolates, or whatever for Lent but fasting from behaviors and working towards positive changes feels like what we as disciples of Jesus should strive for. In fancier terms, we would say that is what repentance is about (Repent and believe in the Gospel).
A few days before Ash Wednesday this post about fasting from Pope Francis popped up on Facebook.
You can also find it on the United States Bishops website as a PDF:
It seems like very good advice and I know that many of these are areas I personally need to work on.
Wherever your Lenten journey takes you, I pray it is fruitful and draws you closer to the flame of God’s Love, Jesus. Do take some time this Lent to simply sit with Jesus in quiet and feel the Love of God flow over you.
Peace, Love, and Blessings
Deacon Richard
